The Selkirk Loop is an amazing two-day
tour through two countries, two states,
and three Indian reservations. This 450
kilometer tour takes two days and can
happen on just about any dates that suit
you.
If you are coming from far away, it would
be best to arrive in the lovely little historic
mining town of Ymir the night before we
depart. This way we can fill out our
paperwork, get acquainted, and take a
ride into the heritage town of Nelson for
dinner. Accommodations for the night will
be arranged for you at the historic Ymir
Hotel or in Nelson, if you prefer.

Selkirk Loop Tour - Day 1
We'll pull out of Ymir in the morning and head south to the Nelway border crossing,
have your passport handy. We'll follow the winding highway along the Pend Orielle
River down to the little town of Metaline Falls where we'll stop at the Western Star Bar
and Grill, a very friendly place! From Metaline, we'll follow the mighty Pend Orielle on
through Colville National Forest and into Newport. As the name implies, this was
once the major river port for steamboat traffic in the late 1800s before the railroad
took over. After a visit to the Pend Orielle County Historical Society and museum,
we'll proceed to Sandpoint. Tonight we'll hang our helmets in this beautiful little town
tucked in between the Selkirks and the Cabinet Mountains on the shore of Lake
Pend Oreille, the second largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi.

Selkirk Loop Tour - Day 2
After breakfast we'll roll on up the 95 between the Kaniksu National Forest and the
Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge for a stop at the town of Bonners Ferry. This town
was once also a major steamboat port before the railway took over. Bonners Ferry
itself was built in 1865 to transport miners rushing to British Columbia for a major
gold strike on the Wildhorse Creek.
Onward to Porthill, just south of the border crossing, originally known by the Natives
as Ockonook - meaning grassy hillside place overlooking water. A Hudson's Bay
Company trading post was established at this historical meeting spot in 1890.
Back in Canada, we roll into the lush, beautiful Creston Valley through abundant
orchard and farm country. The 3A will take us along the shore of Kootenay Lake to
Sirdar where we will stop for lunch at a friendly little family-run pub perched above
the lake. After lunch, we'll follow the renowned 3A as it winds and twists it's way
along the shore of Kootenay Lake, giving us extraordinary lake and mountain views.
A 40 minute ride on the world's longest free ferry lets us off on the west side of
Kootenay Lake where a short ride along the shore brings us to the Queen city,
Nelson. Dinner will be had at one of the many excellent restaurants boasted by this
lovely heritage town, then onward to Ymir to complete our loop.
